Detroit faces a persistent food insecurity problem. In 2021, about 70% of Detroit households were food insecure (Detroit Food Policy). While poverty and unemployment are major factors, a critical yet often overlooked issue is the lack of education, access, and hands-on experience with fresh produce. If communities don't directly experience the value of locally grown food, investing in our own food sovereignty will remain out of reach—keeping us dependent on stores that do not reinvest into our neighborhoods.
By equipping Detroit families and neighborhoods with their own sustainable food sources and skills, we empower them to enhance their community while gaining access to nourishing, affordable meals.
Our solution is Bloom: a dedicated space that offers free fresh produce, hands-on gardening education, and a beautiful environment for community gatherings. Through strategic partnerships with local community gardens, organizations, and influential leaders, we aim to cultivate not just food, but resilience and self-sufficiency.
With your support, Bloom will be more than a garden—it will be a movement, fostering life-long skills and transformative experiences that strengthen the future of Detroit.
